Homemade Catfish Bait

You must have heard many times, that catfish bait recipes are difficult to make. Many people purchase catfish bait at shops but there is always a concern that we are buying artificial products and they might not be safe. So why not learn some homemade catfish bait recipes. I will list some bait recipes which are easy to make, the only precaution you require is a mask or something to cover up your nose as catfish baits smell awful.

How to make Homemade Catfish Bait

Catfish suffer from a very weak eyesight but they have a strong sense of smell that helps them locate and catch their prey. Hence make sure that your homemade bait has a strong smell that makes the fish hungry.

Ingredients
  • pound chicken liver
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • Food processor
  • Plastic container with lid
Preparation
  1. Take a small bowl and mix 1 cup flour, salt and water. Mix well so it becomes a sticky mixture. The salt will mix well in the flour and hold the remaining ingredients together.
  2. Take chicken livers and blend them in a food processor until they are finely processed. Many people also use leftover fish bait for this, but you can also use dog food. The main point here is to get a protein source that decomposes quickly so that its smell is strong enough to attract the catfish.
  3. Add some peeled garlic, make sure the garlic is blended properly, so that its strong smell can make the bait more appealing to the fish.
  4. Now add the flour mixture and mix it well with the liver mixture. Mix it well, so that it can be molded into balls later, if the mixture is too wet add flour and if it's too dry, add water.
  5. Shape the bait into 1 inch balls with your hands and place them in a plastic container. Keep the container covered in sunlight and let it ripe for 48 hours, place this catfish bait in your garage if you don't want your house to smell like fish bait.
Best Homemade Catfish Baits

While fishing in lakes, you must have noticed that there is one lucky individual who catches all the fish. When you ask him for advice, he always gives a polite reply like, "It's just my lucky day" or "the fish just like me". What he really is not letting you know are the secret baits that he is using for fishing. I am listing down some ingredients, which can get you a lot of fish.

Clams: Using freshwater clams as catfish bait are an excellent choice over frozen or processed ones. Freshwater clams are one of the most famous ingredients to catch catfish in summer time.

Worms: You can use night crawlers and garden worms, normally people go for garden worms to catch a catfish. The best part is that you can find these worms everywhere and the catfish just lay in waiting for the worms. You will find mini crawlers in bait shops but you have to dig up garden worms all by yourself.

Shrimp: Using shrimp or small prawns are a favorite catfish bait. Depending on the size of the prawn you can use them whole or cut them in half. People also use prawns with the shell, but take my advice remove the shells and use them. Once you have hooked the bait properly, don't worry about losing your bait in strong water currents. You can purchase shrimp in your local sea food markets either frozen or fresh. I soak them in fish oil for a few minutes so that they get a more pungent odor.

Other than clams, worms and shrimp, you can also use crawdads, cut bait (fish bait) and live or dead minnows as catfish baits. Another name that deserves a mention in this article is cheese, catfish just love cheese. So people use your imagination and come up with your own catfish bait recipes and ingredients, and do keep me posted.
