Tangelo Calories

Similar to human beings and animals, plants also adapt and learn to live in the challenging environment. Tangelo is a fruit which shows the adaptive nature of plants. Tangelo is not a new variety of citrus fruits. It is believed that tangelos are native to southeast Asia and have been in use since 3000 years! Tangelos are also known as 'honeybell'. Lemons, limes, grapefruits, oranges, tangelos and tangerines are some popular varieties of citrus fruits.

What is a Tangelo

Tangelos have developed as a hybrid of the tangerine (often referred to as the mandarin orange) and the grapefruit (cousin of pomelo). So, obviously, they inherit the characteristic properties of an orange and a grapefruit. They look like an orange but are not perfectly round. They are somewhat oblong in shape. They have a typical knob at the top. Size of a tangelo matches the size of a medium-sized orange. It tastes like a tangerine but it is more juicy. It is packed with juice and not pulp. The USDA has developed certain breeds of tangelos which come with delicious flavors and by planting these breeds, you can enjoy bountiful harvests. Minneola tangelo (developed in 1931) and Orlando tangelo (developed in 1911) are the most popular breeds of tangelo. Specific types of tangerine and grapefruit which are chosen for development of these breeds offer them the characteristic properties they have. Thus, the tangelos you get these days are products of human efforts. Minneola tangelo is very large, about 9 - 9 inches in circumference.
