Male Betta Fish

The splendid outlook of the betta fish, is no wonder, is the reason it is a favorite choice of many hobbyists. It attracts onlookers with its long flaunting fins which bear brilliantly vibrant hues and beauty. Generally, the wild species of this fish bear short fins which are of a dull green and brown color. However, with selective breeding, they develop several colors and variations such as yellow, orange, red, green, royal blue, steel blue, black, pastel and cellophane, thus, making them among the well-known and most popular fresh aquarium fish.

How to Care for a Male Betta Fish

The first and foremost step to be taken into consideration is to never keep two or more male betta fish in the same tank. The reason for this brims up from the fact that the male species is also popular by the name, 'Siamese fighting fish', and why so? Male betta fish do not fancy 'brotherhood'. If you happen to keep two males, then it is most likely that the next day or even after few hours, you might find one swimming and one floating. These fish bear the reputation of fighting 'one man standing' matches. Meaning, they will fight until only one survives of them. When the fish erects its fins, it indicates that it is in a mood to pick up a fight. Its aggressiveness can be demonstrated by merely using its own reflection. Use a small hand mirror and place it against the tank so that the fish can view its reflection. You will be amazed to see that the fish will behave in the same way as it would do for a different male in its vicinity. Females on the other hand, do not possess such traits. They can stay together with lots of plants in a large tank. However, they might indulge in occasional pecking, which might cause injuries. During breeding time, the males and females can be kept together, but it's better to keep them separately.

Speaking of diet, the fish is primarily a carnivore, however, occasional vegetable food may also be consumed. Zooplankton, larvae of mosquitoes, flies, crickets or grasshoppers comprise the diet of the betta fish. Shrimp meal, wheat flour, fish meal, brine shrimp, bloodworms and vitamins are available as commercial pallets for these fish.
