Cooking Halibut Steaks in the Oven
Baking refers to the process of cooking fish in dry heat at certain temperatures in an oven. Halibut is not a fatty fish so while baking it, it is a good idea to use marinades and oils to keep the fish from drying out. While cooking halibut in the oven, place the fish in a greased baking pan and brush with either melted butter or olive oil. Bake the halibut in the center of the preheated oven to ensure that it cooks evenly. Here is a great way of cooking halibut in the oven.
Baked Halibut with Tomatoes
Ingredients
- 4 halibut steaks
- 2 medium-sized onions, chopped
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 2 fresh tomatoes, chopped
- 1 cup zucchini, diced
- cup feta cheese, crumbled
- 2 clove garlic, peeled and minced
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- teaspoon salt
- teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Clean the halibut steaks and pat dry with a kitchen towel. Keep it aside and preheat the oven to 220 C. In a medium-sized pan, heat the olive oil and add the chopped onions and garlic. Cook them for 4 to 5 minutes until it is golden brown. Now add the sliced zucchini along with the chopped tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Stir fry for another 5 minutes until the tomatoes are tender and the zucchini is thoroughly cooked. Lightly grease a shallow baking dish and place the halibut steaks on it. Add the zucchini and tomato mixture over the steaks and add the crumbled feta cheese. Bake it in the oven for 15 minutes until the halibut is tender. If the halibut steaks flake off easily with a fork, then the fish is cooked. To serve, arrange a steak on a plate and sprinkle with chopped parsley. This is one of the best halibut recipes.
Cooking Halibut on the Grill
The best way to grill halibut or any other fish, is to lightly grease the cooking grate before you start. You need not use extra virgin olive oil for this, as any vegetable oil will do. Lightly oiling the cooking grate before grilling ensures that the fish does not stick to the grill, and this holds particularly true of fish fillets. For grilling halibut steaks, cut across the grain of the fish, as this makes grilling much easier. If you choose to grill halibut fillets, be very gentle while placing the fillets on the grill. You can also marinade the fish in mild herbs and spices to enhance the flavor. Halibut steaks or fillets do not require too much time to marinade, just an hour or so will do. While grilling keep the heat high and avoid shifting or turning the fish too many times as this will make the fish fall apart. Halibut steaks does not require too much time to cook and 6 to 7 minutes on each side is sufficient.
